Today is the 100th anniversary of the death of the architect of Sagrada Família Basilica: Venerable Antoni Gaudí.
Like Blessed Fra Angelico, Gaudí stands out among sacred artists as a man renowned not only for his creativity, but also for his holiness of life.
Catholic Exchange has kindly published a short article I wrote on Gaudí to celebrate this anniversary, noting some highlights of his career and why the Church may canonize him as a saint.
The Church’s litany of saints, and her tradition of artists, is a living tradition. This thesis lies at the heart of Angelico’s ministry, which by the grace of God, continues to grow.
Today, Pope Leo will bless the final tower of Sagrada Família, which is finally finishing construction this year. During this historic moment, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide and inspire the next generation of sacred artists today, in the 21st century.
Blessed Fra Angelico, and Venerable Antoni Gaudi: pray for us!
