Happy "Our Father" Day!

As we enter into Holy Week, I hope you’ll pardon me to briefly step outside the unique solemnity of this time to commemorate a very special day for our ministry here at Angelico Sacred Music…
Today, April 14, marks the one-year anniversary of the premiere of ASM’s first composition, Our Father. Back then, “Angelico Sacred Music” was nothing more than a name for my seminary dorm room project. But after spending four days with Cappella at the University of Mary, the beautiful voices and enthusiastic support of the choir convinced me that we had found something truly special with Angelico Sacred Music’s charism…

The time I shared with the UMary students in Cappella that week was especially beautiful because it included so much more than rehearsal. We enjoyed meals together on campus, celebrated with ice cream, and shared some great conversation at UMary’s campus pub, “Chesterton’s.”
The fun didn’t stop there. We prayed a rosary at the beautiful grotto on campus, went to a faculty music recital, and I even went to “Contemporary Philosophy” class twice in one day—once on Zoom for the seminary, and once in person with the philosophy majors in the choir, who kindly invited me to join them.

As you can see, our collaboration was not merely performing at another Mass, but a special time of sharing our faith, and integrating it with our love for music to create something new and beautiful for the Church, our Mother.
Then, after these blessed days of friendship and prayer together came the climax: Our Father was brought to life, for the very first time, in Annunciation Chapel for a full church before the 8pm Sunday Mass. One year later, the thought of it still moves me toward tears. O beautiful night. O joyful night. O blessed night.

On this special anniversary, I want to again extend a special “thank you” to Dr. Rebecca Raber, the Director of Cappella, who in the fall of 2023 decided in her great charity that an email from a random seminarian professing to be a composer was worth her time (most of the choir directors who I emailed back then thought otherwise!).
It is no exaggeration to say that without Cappella, Angelico Sacred Music as we know it today would not exist. ASM will always owe Cappella a debt of gratitude for their collaboration that allowed this ministry to take flight, and ASM looks forward to working together with them again.
Please join me in praying an Our Father today for our friends at the University of Mary. Wishing you and your families a very solemn, beautiful, and blessed Holy Week.
For the beauty of the Church,
Ryan Everson
