I have a question for you: In the history of the Catholic Church, what will be the contributions of 21st-century America??
It’s a big question, loaded with possibility, and with potential for beauty. The Church within our nation is already a world leader in numerous efforts to serve the poor and protect the unborn. Further, in 2025, a son of our own nation has been honored with the Petrine Office of St. Peter as our pope. We are living in a beautifully historic period for America’s growth as a daughter of the Church!
In my keynote address from Angelicofest, I presented a response to this question, weaving together elements of philosophy, theology, and music theory, to provide a thorough yet concise vision for where ASM is going, and why our work responds to the Church’s present needs in a unique way.
This keynote is titled: American Catholic Patrimony: An Ecclesiology for Contemporary Sacred Music. In this talk, I share some thoughts about:
How creating new sacred art honors our nation and Holy Mother Church
ASM’s vision for a new genre of sacred music: American Neo-Renaissance Polyphony
The meaning of truly “Catholic” ministry in the life of the Church
How to reverence our beautiful Catholic tradition while also looking forward to create something new
When we seek advancements in music, theology, or any other discipline, we know that there is nothing good, true, or beautiful here below that did not first exist in the Divine Mind of our Father in Heaven. I hope that Angelico can serve as a portal for expressing His beautiful ideas in a way that expresses our culture’s love for Him, and I’m so grateful for the many people who have helped bring that mission to life in the past year.
Please join me in praying that this vision for Angelico will continue to be shared and resonate in the hearts of many others across our nation, inspiring them to join us in creating an American patrimony of classical sacred music.
For the beauty of the Church,
